Probably the most eagerly awaited open all summer with it's new courts and new lights.
The club now has 5 courts all with Tiger Turf surface. The fifth court was added recently, with all existing surfaces upgraded to Tiger Turf, and new lighting.
And to go along with the new courts and lights, Ballinlough also have a new website.
It's being a busy year for Ballinlough and while the year's not over yet there very successful open is.

Does talent really matter?
Finding a young talented tennis player among thousands of average juniors
is definitely a challenge. It is not unusual for parents to ask a tennis
coach will their child be a Pro Tennis player one day. Coaches often say
that every aspiring player can become a Pro as long as they work and train
hard. If your child truly wants to be a pro, they must have the dedication
to train and live like one.
Does this mean that most coaches do not necessarily know if a child is
capable of playing at high level? Even knowing that a junior does not have
"the natural gift" for hitting the ball the right way, coaches choose not
to tell.
Lets look at the scientific research about the significance of talent. It
is defined as "something that was said to be given to people, allowing them
to do things average people can't". It is a natural ability that some people
are simply born with. That distinguishes them from all other players and
puts them in the higher league. That means a champion is born with the
necessary talent. You do not get to learn that!
Piotr Unierzyski has a done research project on junior tennis players within
Europe in 1994-2002. During his research, Unierzyski interviewed and tested
1000 juniors from around 40 countries. Among those juniors were Justine Henin,
Roger Federer, Guillermo Coria, Kim Clijsters. The average age of the
children he interviewed was around 12-13.
Here are some interesting facts about this research.
They were all younger, slimmer, more powerful, faster, and had more
experience than the rest of the juniors. They all started joining
tournaments at approximately the same age and played at least 45 matches every
year (below average). The strangest thing about these young players was
that they all practiced tennis less than others. However, they did more
fitness training. The next interesting fact is that their parents were not
very involved in their everyday trainings.
These results show that natural talent is definitely an imperative when it
comes to being a world wide recognizable tennis player. Piotr Unierzyski's
research shows that being devoted to training is not crucial for
success. Thus today's world known players, were allowed to really enjoy
this sport and not to be fed up with it from hard everyday training.
Instead, they were building their mental strength that lead them to the
very top of this popular sport.

Director of Tennis Position Available
Director of Tennis
Rushbrooke Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club is one of Munster’s largest and prodigious clubs with a great history in National, Provincial and Local tennis. The club has 9 Omni and 2 grass courts with a very active senior and junior membership. We are now looking to appoint a Director of Tennis to lead the coaching and playing element of these plans. We currently have between 6 and 7 hundred all categories of members.
The selected person will be an independent contractor to Rushbrooke Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and as such will be responsible for his/her own tax affairs and payments. The person will be expected to carry out the tasks detailed in the attached job description. As this is a comprehensive list, it would incumbent on the Director of Tennis to agree with the Committee how much they would provide themselves and how much they would contract to other coaches.
The Director of Tennis will report to the Club Committee on a monthly basis and work closely with both the Tennis and Junior Committees and individual Committee members on a day to day basis.
All clubs have unique features and Rushbrooke has a history of providing an inclusive Junior Coaching programme and Summer Programme and how this is either continued or replaced would need to be agreed with the Committee as a priority.
The Director of Tennis will be responsible for appointing all additional coaches, in conjunction with the Committee, and monitoring their performance. The role will therefore call for experience and ability in managing other coaches.
We see this as a key appointment within the development of the Club and therefore we are looking for an experienced, highly qualified coach who has continued to update their skills and who can work well with a varied group of stakeholders.
Additional skills that can be considered requirements are computer literacy, punctuality, reliability and a personable manner.
Remuneration and terms and conditions of employment will be discussed at interview. Remuneration will reflect the importance of this position. We are willing to be flexible in any employment contract but we would need to be convinced that any prospective Director of Tennis would commit a satisfactory amount of time to the role.
The appointment will commence in early September or at such later date is agreed. Applicants should enclose a comprehensive CV and give the name of two relevant referees who would not be approached until a contract was offered.

1.2 Work with Coaches in planning and organising an integrated training programme for all age and ability groups.
1.3 To work with the Committee and Coaches to develop a culture of improvement amongst the members.
1.4 To investigate and implement policy with regard to Play & Stay, Cardio Tennis, ITN and other programmes
2. Develop a Junior Programme with the Junior Committee and Coaches that
2.1 Addresses the needs of the Club as well as the individual.
2.2 Segregates, in time and space, age and/or ability groups.
2.3 Concentrates heavily on Tennis and Child Safety.
2.4 Gives time and resources to those who want to improve.
2.5 Specifically produce proposals for a Summer Programme and implement any agreed plan.
3. Senior Competitive Tennis and Events with Tennis Committee
3.1 Develop a Coaching and Training programme for League Teams.
3.2 Develop the Club Championships, Handicaps and other Competitive events within the Club.
3.3 Work with coaches to provide programmes to improve the coaching that Rushbrooke offers to competitive players.
3.4 Develop greater formal and informal competition.
4. Develop Recreational Tennis for our Members with Tennis and Social Committees
4.1 Organise the Coaches to offer group and individual coaching.
4.2 Develop and ensure implementation of an expansion in the programmes we offer to recreational players via such concepts as Cardio Tennis, Play & Stay, ITN Assessments etc.
4.3 Work with the Sub Committees and coaches to encourage participation via on-court and club activities.
5. Club and Coach Continuous Professional Development with Tennis Ireland
5.1 Review the development of all coaches and ensure that they are using best practice in the course of their work.
5.2 Work with the Munster Branch and Tennis Ireland to ensure that Rushbrooke is offering the best possible programmes to all age groups.
5.3 Research development of internal competition nationally and internationally and implement agreed proposals.
6. Management of the Programme with the Club Committee
6.1 Appoint, manage and motivate coaches.
6.2 Ensure that coaches update their skills as required.
6.3 Recruit and manage new coaches where required for specific duties
6.4 To agree with the coaches times of work and division of private coaching where this is an issue.

Professional Racket Restringing Course for Cork
Here's a great opportunity to learn how to string or to learn more about stringing. The course is a Professional Stringers Course and will be held on Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th of August at a venue to be confirmed.

“Following on from the successes of two Professional Stringer courses held in Dublin, Liam Nolan, former Wimbledon Head Stringer will be coming to Cork in August.
Liam is also Founder and Technical Director of the UK Racket stringers Association, under whose umbrella there is a growing Irish stringing group. The course is open to all, whether a beginner or an experienced stringer who wants to learn how to do things as it is done for the pro’s at Wimbledon and other Grand Slams.
The two days of training are busy, friendly and informal, no final test at the end, fully certificated and attracts full coaching credits. Course members will leave with the skills, knowledge and confidence to tackle any racket servicing task on all badminton, squash, racquetball and tennis rackets. You can bring along your own rackets to work on if you wish and there may be some new stringing machines for sale at the end of the course. The cost is reduced from £249.00 to just 200 Euros and this can be paid on arrival.

New tennis blog definitely worth a look!
James McGee is currently Ireland's top tennis player and the recent hero of Ireland's Davis Cup win in Egypt.
James has started what should be a very interesting blog on life as a professional player.

New Courts at Mitchelstown Tennis Club
Mitchelstown Tennis Club was founded in 1892, making it one of the oldest clubs around. It is located on the picturesque Georges Street in the heart of Mitchelstown and thanks to a lot of hard work from its members it now boasts newly surfaced courts.
To show off the new courts, Mitchelstown are having an open day this bank holiday Monday from 2-6pm and it is open to the public.
A great afternoons activities are guaranteed so why not pop along and enjoy the fun and games.

Irelands First National Tennis Day.
To all Clubs looking for members !!!!
Tennis Ireland has announced Saturday 7th July as Ireland’s first National Tennis Day.
The idea behind this important initiative is simple: on July 7th tennis clubs should run an ‘Open Day’, where all comers are invited to come along and try the game. The purpose is to use the event as a way of actively recruiting new club members.
A number of clubs ran Open Days in 2011, and the response was universally positive, with new members bringing new income to clubs.
Tennis Ireland will generate national publicity for NTD, with a media launch towards the end of May (Date to be confirmed) , and countrywide radio coverage in late June. Each participating club should then focus on generating the local publicity that will ensure a good turnout on the day. A new website has been launched at www.nationaltennisday.ie, where you will find information and resources, and where clubs can sign up to participate in National Tennis Day.
I want to suggest the following course of action to all clubs:
1. Do all you can to ensure that your club hosts an Open Day on National Tennis Day (If busy on the 7th the 8th would also be a good option) . Talk to whomever you have to talk to at the club, and convince them how important this initiative is.
2. When the club has committed to hosting an Open Day, get involved in helping the club to run it in the most effective manner. Use the skills and expertise of all of the members in the club to ensure that the day is a great success.
National Tennis Day has the potential to directly boost the numbers of new club members which will in turn boost the revenue for the club . It can also help to introduce thousands of new players nationwide to the game we all love.

As you will remember Tennis Ireland in conjunction with Munster Branch held an information road show in Mitchlestown on March 28th . This event was very well attended on the night and we said that we would inform you when the information discussed on the night would be available on the Tennis Ireland Site .

Ankle Sprains - by Claire Griffin

Ankle sprains
I’m sure that everybody knows at least one person who takes part in sport who has sustained a sprained ankle, as it is a very common sporting injury. But a large percentage of the non-sporting population also suffer this injury . The most common injury to the ankle is to the lateral (outside) aspect of it, usually damaging one or more ligaments (tissues that attach from bone to bone), giving rise to what is called a sprain. A lateral ankle sprain usually results from “going over” on the ankle, in which the foot is inverted and plantarflexed. In other words, the foot is turned inward, with the toes pointing downwards towards the floor. This may result from awkward placement of the foot e.g. coming down a step awkwardly, landing awkwardly on the foot after jumping, or landing on another player’s foot during sport. They are commonly seen in activities requiring rapid changes in direction (such as basketball, football, rugby), especially if these take place on an uneven surface such as grass.
The mechanism of injury is an important clue to diagnosis following an ankle sprain. A Chartered Physiotherapist can diagnose with ease what structures are damaged. An inversion injury suggests lateral ligament damage and an eversion injury (in which the foot is turned outward, with the arch closest to the floor) suggests medial (inside) ligament damage. Lateral sprains are more common than medial sprains as the medial ligament (also known as the deltoid ligament) is much stronger than the lateral ligament, and is composed of two layers (Brukner and Khan, 1997).
Ankle sprains may commonly be accompanied by an audible snap, crack or tear, which, although is of great concern to the athlete sustaining the injury, is of no diagnostic significance in the case of ankle injuries (Brukner and Khan, 2007). Depending on the severity of the injury, the athlete may continue to play or may have to rest immediately. Swelling is usually immediate. Ligament injuries may be mild, moderate or severe (Reid, 1992).
So how is it managed?
It is imperative that a correct diagnosis as to the severity of the injury is obtained from a Chartered Physiotherapist, as this will guide rehabilitation and prevent prolonged injury and delayed return to sport. If a fracture is suspected, a Chartered Physiotherapist will advise an Xray.
Immediate management (24 – 48hours) involves PRICE (Protection Rest Ice Compression Elevation to limit pain and swelling that may cause damage within the ankle joint and restrict range of motion. The injured athlete should avoid promoting swelling and excessive blood flow to the region such as hot showers, alcohol, and excessive weight-bearing. If mobility is painful, the patient may use crutches to mobilise.
After 48 hours, progressive weight-bearing is encouraged as from this point onwards, helps to reduce swelling, increase ankle motion and enhances rehabilitation (Brukner and Khan, 2007). Early mobility is essential to increase ligament strength and restore function (Eiff, Smith and Smith, 1994) and can be done without aggravating the injury. If crutches are being used, partial weight-bearing may be initiated in normal heel-toe gait pattern, gradually progressing to using one crutch (using the crutch on the opposite side to the injured ankle), then full weight-bearing without a crutch.
Rehabilitation
Non-weight-bearing active strengthening exercise can begin using a theraband to improve plantarflexion, dorsiflexion (moving foot and toes upwards towards the ceiling), inversion and eversion. Weight-bearing exercise (e.g. calf raises, wobble board exercises) begins as pain allows, preferably from the second day after injury. Proprioceptive training is an extremely important part of the rehabilitation. Proprioception describes the joint’s ability to determine position, motion, vibration and pressure. This is impaired after injury, lending to impaired balance and decreased coordination. Research has proven that improved proprioception increases ankle joint stability and decreases recurrent ankle sprains (Ross et al, 2007). This begins with balancing on the injured leg, and progresses to balance work on a mini trampoline. As rehabilitation progresses, functional exercises (sport-specific) are included e.g. jumping, running in a figure-of-eight. The athlete can return to sport when functional exercises can be completed without pain during or after activity.

A Legend of Irish Tennis Retires.
The end of a career happens to everybody and it is a sad day when it arrives but it is not made easier when it is forced upon you.
Conor Niland retired yesterday from Professional tennis due to an ongoing problem with his hips. Following on from the most successful year of any Irish player, Conor had high hopes of progressing on to bigger things this year.
How you can get bigger than playing in Wimbledon and the US Open is a tough task but anyone who knows Conor will know that conquering tough tasks was what he was all about.
I have seen Conor play on many occasions, going back to his junior days, and he is and always was a role model for the future stars of Irish tennis. His behaviour on court was always exemplary and his dedication to his sport was second to none. He was happy to play his part on any of the teams he was involved with, whether it be Interpros or Davis Cup and because of this I have no doubt if Conor gets involved in Irish Tennis going forward it can only mean success.
I wish Conor the best for the future, congratulate him on his career and thank him for putting Irish tennis firmly on the map.

South of Ireland Omni Court Championships 2012.
Well another successful start to the season for Rushbrooke Tennis Club. With over 260 entries for the weekend, tennis is in a healthy state if this tournament is anything to go by.
And with 10 out of 21 finals going the distance, competition for titles is going to be very difficult indeed.
A big congratulations to Colum Stack, captain of Rushbrooke Tennis Club, on running a very friendly and well organised event on his first event. It promises to be a good year in Rushbrooke with Colum organising things.

The first open of the year is underway at Rushbrooke and it's a big one. With over 260 entrants it's proving to be a busy weekend in Cobh.
So far the weather has being good and the tennis hasn't disappointed either and with a full schedule ahead for the next two days to be ready for finals day on Monday, there is lots of tennis to be played.
If you're looking for something to do this weekend you could do a lot worse than to pop into Rushbrooke. You can be sure of a welcome reception and some very entertaining matches in what has to be one of the best clubs around (a bit biased I know, but I'm not wrong either).
Tomorrow's matches begin at 9am and run all day long. To see the schedule click here.

Munster Branch Information Nights
Tennis Ireland in conjunction with Munster Branch will hold a number of information sessions in the coming weeks on the latest developments in tennis in Ireland . All of your clubs have been notified from the Tennis Ireland Offices therefore this is just a reminder and also flavor of what is coming up at the session for those of you who may not have been aware . Rushbrooke Prediction League 2012.
Think you know sports?, fancy yourself at predicting results, well here's your chance.
Rushbrooke tennis club are running a prediction league again this year and you can get involved.
For all the details you need read below.
2012 Fun/Buster prediction league.
Entry forms are now available for a new Prediction League buster that will run from April until November. There is a number of sporting events scheduled throughout the year and people are asked to predict winners etc. from each event. Scores will be awarded for each event and added up until the final events are completed in November. The target is to try and get 100 entries and it is hoped anybody with any interest in sport will pit their knowledge against a host of other people. A scoring table will be available on the club website Rushbrooketennis.ie and club Facebook page throughout the year to follow the scores as the events progress.
Entry to this league is €20.00 and if the target of 100 entries is reached then a substantial prize fund will be available to the top four places.
100 entries reached will result in following prize fund.
1st prize €600.00
2nd prize €300.00
3r d prize €100.00
4th prize €75.00
If 100 entries are not reached then the prize fund will be a reduced percentage of the total entry fees.
If the 100 entries are surpassed then the prize fund will increase accordingly.
FORMS ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE BAR AND CAN BE DOWNLOADED FROM THE CLUB WEBSITE. WHEN COMPLETED THEY MUST BE RETURNED TO THE BAR WITH FEE AND MARKED 2012 PREDICTION LEAGUE.

News from Lower Aghada Tennis & Sailing Club
Exciting Club Developments: Resurfacing of Courts 1 - 4
This month sees exciting developments for the club, as courts 1 to 4 are resurfaced.
Work commences this weekend, with the old surface being removed on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th. The contractor will come on site on Monday 12th to begin preparation work for the laying of new ‘Tiger Turf’ courts, the surface chosen after trials and consultations with numerous other clubs nationwide.
Weather permitting, the contractor is expected to be off site within 12-15 working days and the new courts ready to play on. Throughout the construction, courts 5 and 6 will remain open for play, and a new court booking sheet is now up in the clubhouse, that will see courts available for one hour time slots, available to all members.
Commenting on the new development, Club Chairman, Steve Obersby said “This is really an exciting project for the club, and when completed will see our club with the best surface available on the market today.”
The club is now open for membership in all categories, and full details and application forms are available from any committee member or from the office on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

Annual Birds Competition
Lower Aghada’s Annual Birds Competition draws to a close this Friday 9th March, and the final will see the last action on Courts 1 to 4 before work begins on resurfacing project on Saturday. Once again, this year’s tournament was a huge success, with great tennis being played by all teams involved over the last number of weeks. Lower Aghada Tennis Club would like to thank Kevin and Mary Day of Eurospar, Whitegate for their continued sponsorship of this popular event.
